A MEMORIAL STONE WAS UNVEILED TO REMEMBER MURDERED JEWS WOMEN FROM LITHUANIA AND OTHER EUROPEAN STATES

On August 24, near Torun, Mierzynek village a memorial stone was unveiled for the Jews killed by the Nazis during Second World War. Mr. Audrius Žulys, the Minister Counsellor and Charge d'Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania attended the ceremony.In August 24, 1944 the train with the thousands of the Stutthof’s concentration camp Jews from Lodz, Kaunas, Budapest and other cities in Europe, stopped at Lubicz Lower station. From there, the women were directed to Mierzynek, which was founded in the Stutthof concentration camp unit. Women were ordered to dig anti-tank ditches. They died from exhaustion, starvation, cold, were killed by the Nazis.

Memorial stone unveiling was initiated by the Polish Parliament member Jan Krzysztof Dodanowski and local authorities. The Polish Vice-President of the Senate Jan Wyrowinski, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Province leaders, President of Torun, Jewish, Catholic, Orthodox, Evangelical-Lutheran clergy, and other distinguished guests took part in the event. The speeches were emphasized on the importance of the historical memory of the Holocaust.
