European Commission supports Lithuania in its efforts to increase energy security
In his meeting with the Deputy Director General at Directorate General for Energy and Transport Mr. Dominique Ristori, Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas voiced out the concern over the situation in the country following the decommissioning of Ignalina NPP Unit II.
According to the Prime Minister, the Lithuanian energy is bound to become highly dependable on gas supplied from sole source, which, as a result, will turn Lithuania into an even more isolated “energy island”, as interconnection projects with Poland and Sweden will still be underway, while reliable gas supply falls under realistic threat due to different reasons.
The Prime Minister also briefed Dominique Ristori on Lithuania’s plans to construct a new nuclear power plant in cooperation with Latvia, Estonia and Poland.
Deputy Director General at Directorate General for Energy and Transport Mr. Dominique Ristori paid credit to Lithuania for its role in shaping a single EU energy policy and consolidating EU on energy security. According to Dominique Ristori, it is very important for Lithuania to upgrade current capacities, address issues of gas supply and find an immediate solution as regards interconnections. The guest concluded by saying that the European Commission was ready to enter into a constructive energy security dialogue with Lithuania.
