Paying Tribute to the Defenders of Warsaw's Praga from the russian army in 1794
On October 30 Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Audronė Markevičienė, military attaché Col. Vilmas Šatas and Second Secretary Eduard Mažul paid tribute to the soldiers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) and the inhabitants of Warsaw who died in 1794 while defending Warsaw's Prague from Russian troops.
A wreath was laid on the symbolic grave of General Jakub Jasiński at the old Kamionki cemetery. The ceremony was attended by youth from the nearby LXXII Secondary School. Gen. Jakub Jasiński, the school principal Mrs. Bożena Kozak and representatives of the authorities of the Praga-Południe District.
A wreath was also placed at the Church of Our Lady of Loreto, under a commemorative plaque dedicated to the inhabitants of Prague who died during the defense of Warsaw.
The several-day defense of Warsaw's Praga, often referred to in historiography as the Massacre of Prague, was the last battle for the GDL army, in which approximately 8,000 Lithuanian soldiers, most of whom died, took part. The joint defense of Warsaw was one of the most famous and heroic examples of Lithuanian-Polish brotherhood in arms in the fight for the freedom of both nations.
