President Adamkus and OSCE Secretary General discussed Eastern European issues

Thursday, May 8, Vilnius – Today the President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus met with Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

According to the President, Lithuania as an active member of OSCE strongly supports the principles and values fostered by the Organisation. In the President’s opinion, OSCE plays a particularly important role in Eastern Europe where democracy is still weak in certain countries. In the meeting the President underlined that Lithuania makes preparations for OSCE presidency in 2011 very seriously, planning its internal resources and discussing presidency priorities which include the solution of ‘frozen’ conflicts in Moldova and Georgia. The topics covered in the meeting included the situation in Georgia. According to the President, Russia’s actions in the region are a great concern, and the international community must explicitly denounce illegal and provocative actions taken by Russia towards Georgia. Discussing the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia, the parties of the meeting underlined that OSCE and Lithuania would be actively involved in the observation of the elections and expressed hope that the elections would go smoothly and transparently, thus contributing to further strengthening of democratic processes in the country. Among other topics covered was a more active role that could possibly be played by OSCE in restoring economic and social life in Afghanistan. The President said he hoped OSCE would get more involved in this field. Lithuania would welcome a more active participation by OSCE in the territory covered by Lithuania-led Ghowr Provincial Reconstruction Group. The President and the OSCE Secretary General talked about political developments in Russia, situation in Belarus, prospects of the new European state, Kosovo, and stability in Western Balkans as a whole.
