President Adamkus: Relations Between Lithuania and Poland are Developing in a Favourable and Mutually Beneficial Way
Monday, January 14, (Vilnius) – President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received Mr. Bronislaw Komorowski, Marshal of the Sejm of Poland
“I am pleased to know that you have chosen Lithuania for your first foreign visit,” said the Head of State and congratulated Mr. Komorowski on receiving Honorary Doctor’s Degree of Mykolas Riomeris University.
The Lithuanian President noted that bilateral relations were developing in a very favourable and mutually beneficial way, while Parliamentary Assembly of Lithuania and Poland was considered one of the most effective forms of bilateral cooperation.
Mr. Komorowski thanked President Adamkus for his visit to Poland on 11th November when the country marked the restoration of independence and highly valued his speech which was greatly received throughout the entire country. The head of the Polish Parliament said that the Lithuanians and Poles lived through similar past experiences and now could understand each other very well.
The Head of the Parliament spoke about new agreements with the leadership of the Lithuanian Parliament on further improvement of cooperation between the parliaments starting from the lowest levels.
According to the Marshal of the Polish Sejm, perfect relations can be achieved not only through highlighting key parts of political and economic cooperation but also through resolving problems faced by the Poles living in Lithuania and Lithuanians living in Poland.
The meeting also touched upon the construction of electricity bridges to Sweden and Poland as well as building of a new nuclear power plant. “We will have to put lots of effort but I believe that these projects will be implemented,” said President Adamkus.
The Lithuanian President talked about the implementation of the project Via Baltica from the environmental point of view in a sensitive Augustow region of Poland. Mr. Komorowski informed the President that a compromise should be achieved soon with regard to building the bypass.
President Adamkus and Marshal Komorowski also discussed about relations with Russia and situation in Georgia.
