President of Ukraine Thanks Lithuania for Support
During the meeting between Prime Minister of Lithuania Gediminas Kirkilas and President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko dynamics of bilateral Lithuanian-Ukrainian relations and prospects for two-way investment were discussed.
Prime Minister asked the President to facilitate transit conditions for container train “Viking”. Yushchenko promised to delegate consideration of this matter to the responsible authorities.
Prime Minister Kirkilas said that Lithuania and Ukraine are united by common historical experience and underlined that Ukraine’s place is in Europe.
President Yushchenko reiterated the importance of prospects for Ukraine’s membership in the EU and thanked Lithuania for its consistent support.
The President of Ukraine and Prime Minister of Lithuania discussed prospects for Ukraine to receive an offer for NATO membership Action Plan in the forthcoming Alliance Summit in April. Kirkilas informed Yushchenko about Lithuania’s participation in the NATO peacekeeping missions and thanked Ukraine for its support for the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan.
Prime Minister of Lithuania and President of Ukraine also discussed prospects for the Odesa-Brody-Plock-Gdansk oil pipeline. According to Yushchenko, the pipeline should be opened this year already. Kirkilas, during his talk on gas import from the third countries to Lithuania, expressed his concern about the environmental and other security aspects of the “Nord Stream“ gas pipeline. Prospects for electricity import from Ukraine to Lithuania were also discussed, and it was agreed to hold expert group consultations in the near future.
President Yushchenko and Prime Minister Kirkilas also discussed Lithuanian-Russian and Ukrainian-Russian relations as well as the visit of President of Ukraine to Lithuania
