Presidents of Lithuania and Poland Underline the Importance of Bilateral Strategic Cooperation

Friday, February 1, Vilnius – President Valdas Adamkus met with President Lech Kaczyński of Poland who came on a working visit to Vilnius today.

The two presidents discussed bilateral and regional cooperation as well as joint actions at the EU and NATO forums throughout 2008. They talked about coordinating steps towards enhancing the EU Eastern Policy and supporting the development of democracy in Europe’s East.

Special focus was placed at the meeting on energy security issues. Valdas Adamkus and Lech Kaczyński discussed joint Lithuanian-Polish energy projects and the possibility of building new gas pipelines, including the Amber pipeline which would run from Russia via the Baltic States and Poland to Western Europe.

The presidents of Lithuania and Poland underlined the importance of bilateral cooperation at EU forums to the neighboring countries and regions.

Speaking about EU relations with the neighboring countries in the East, the two presidents welcomed the successful completion of Ukraine’s negotiations for membership in the World Trade Organization and expressed hope that it would bring Ukraine closer to the Euro-Atlantic community and speed up the necessary economic reforms on the domestic scene.

Both leaders emphasized the need to promote a closer relationship between Georgia and NATO and reiterated their support to Georgia’s aspirations for integration into Euro-Atlantic structures.
Valdas Adamkus and Lech Kaczyński stressed the importance of regular and dynamic political contacts not only between the Lithuanian and Polish heads of state, but also between heads of government and speakers of parliament.
