Prime Minister expresses Lithuania’s support to Georgia
On his return from the visits to Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas stopped by in Tbilisi, where he met with President Michael Saakashvili.
The Lithuanian Prime Minister expressed his support to Georgia which found itself in a stalemate following the announced intentions by Russia to develop relations with separatist regimes of Abhasia and South Ossetia.
According to Kirkilas, this decision is incompatible with the principals of international law, besides, it destabilizes the situation in South Caucasus. The Prime Minister underlined the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty and was for peaceful dialogue.
Georgia’s President Michael Saakashvili gave his assessment as regards the political tensions with Russia and separatist regimes of Abhasia and South Ossetia.
Kirkilas was convinced that Georgia would be able to maintain peaceful and constructive dialogue, adding that the EU should seek for deeper involvement in conflict resolution in South Caucasus.
May parliamentary elections in Georgia were also on the agenda. Kirkilas noted that Lithuania will send its observers to follow the elections.
The Prime Minister and the President touched upon such issues as Georgia’s relations with NATO and the EU, EU visa facilitation and possible EU-Georgia free trade agreement. The Lithuanian Prime Minister briefed the President on his visits to Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, while the President spoke about latest economic and political developments in Georgia.
