Strategic Projects Discussed during the Lithuanian Prime Minister‘s Meeting with Speaker of the Polish Sejm
On Monday Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas quipped as he met Speaker of the Polish Sejm Bronislaw Komorowski saying that the ‘first-visit-to-Lithuania’ tradition by Polish top officials is always very welcome and well timed. In Komorowski‘s view, this fact is a telling proof of strategic partnership between Lithuania and Poland. Further, both interlocutors stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, developing joint projects and defending common interests in the EU.
The Lithuanian Prime Minister expressed his opinion that Lithuania and Poland should accelerate the implementation of a number of projects in progress, particularly energy and transport infrastructure projects as, in his opinion, they would be instrumental in putting an end to the energy isolation of the Baltic States and connecting them to the West.
Also, Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas informed that the works for the construction of the new nuclear power plant were progressing according to the schedule: negotiations on the national investor were completed, with the deliberations on the proposed amendments to the Draft Nuclear Power Plant Law already on the way. The Prime Minister assured the state would hold 61,7% stake at the national investor company LEO LT, while the private investor would own the balance 38,3%. Gediminas Kirkilas also notified about the pending international environmental impact study which would help decide on the capacity of the future nuclear power plant.
The Prime Minister reiterated Lithuania’s support for Poland regarding Augustów roundabout, thereby demonstrating determination to achieve timely completion of the strategic project Via Baltica. The proposed way of the implementation of the project Via Baltica would undoubtedly contribute to putting an end to the isolation of the Baltic States.
Finally, the Prime Minister underlined that it was important that EU treated crime against humanity equally, be it conducted by Nazi or total regimes. The Lithuanian side enquired as to possibilities for Poland to coordinate this issue at the top political level.
